Supports & Orientation: The Two Skills That Make or Break a Resin Print
Most failed resin prints die for one of two reasons — bad orientation or bad supports. Learn to angle the model and place supports like someone who has ruined a few prints already.
Ask any experienced resin printer why a print failed and you'll hear the same two culprits over and over: orientation and supports. Nail these and your success rate jumps from "frustrating" to "reliable." Here's how to think about both when you 3D print a figure.
Why orientation matters so much
Every resin layer has to peel off the FEP film after it cures. The bigger a layer's flat cross-section, the more force that peel applies — and the more likely something tears or shifts. The whole game of orientation is keeping cross-sections small and putting the peel forces somewhere they won't hurt detail.
- Angle the model, typically 30–45°, rather than printing it dead vertical or flat.
- Point delicate features upward — claws, weapons, thin capes — so they print last and clean.
- Hide the support scars on the back or underside, never across the face.
Supports 101: the three densities
Supports hold the model in place against peel forces and create printable starting points for overhangs. Think in three tiers:
- Heavy supports on load-bearing areas — the base, the contact points, anything that anchors the model.
- Medium supports across the bulk of the body and large surfaces.
- Light, hand-placed supports on faces and fine detail, where you want the smallest possible scar even if removal is fiddlier.
Islands: the silent print-killer
An "island" is any part of a layer that has nothing beneath it — a floating sword tip, a detached fingertip mid-print. It cures, drops into the vat, and either ruins the print or becomes a blob that wrecks the next layer. Run your slicer's island check layer by layer before every print. One unsupported island is the single most common way a great-looking setup dies on the plate.
Pre-supported files save evenings
Here's the shortcut the pros use: when a sculptor ships a pre-supported version of a model, take it. They've already solved orientation and support placement for that specific sculpt. It's the difference between printing tonight and spending the evening in support-editor purgatory. Many listings on STL Figs flag which figures ship pre-supported, which is worth filtering for while you're still learning.
A repeatable pre-print checklist
- Model angled 30–45°, fragile features pointing up.
- Heavy supports on contact points, light supports on the face.
- Island check run top to bottom — zero unsupported islands.
- Raft and supports actually touching the model (not floating 0.1mm off).
